Shakespeare

The town renamed by a diamond hoax survivor — kept honest by one ranch family.

The All-American Tour · No. 21 of 50

The story

Shakespeare's whole biography is frontier hustle: founded as Ralston City on silver promotions, nearly destroyed by association with the great 1872 diamond-salting hoax, then relaunched under the Bard's respectable name. Billy the Kid reportedly washed dishes here; the Stratford Hotel's dining room hosted at least one hanging from its rafters.

Mining sputtered out through the 1920s and the Hill family bought the townsite in 1935, running it as a working ranch and fiercely unglamorous historic site ever since — original buildings, no gift-shop gloss, opened on scheduled tour weekends by the descendants.

What remains today

The Stratford Hotel, general store, assay office, and stage station — original and privately preserved.
