The federal survey describes the site: 6 mi. S of Petersburg, on SE coast of Kupreanof I., Alex. Arch.
This is the site of an abandoned cannery, established in 1901 (U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1901, addenda facing p. 9). It obtained a post office in 1902 which was discontinued in 1905 (Ricks, 1965, p. 66).
Tonka appears in the U.S. Geological Survey's place-name archive as a historical populated place — a settlement that once carried a name and no longer does. Our editors are verifying its full story against census records, newspaper archives, and county histories; this record will grow as sources are confirmed.
